In route to a family reunion I read, Daring Greatly by Brene Brown and I was struck by this quote:
“When failure is not an option we can forget about learning, creativity and innovation.”
This really stood out to me because not only do I face the fear of failure on a daily basis but I hear it from so many of you as well.
We are afraid to fail. Afraid to do it wrong. Afraid of messing up that recipe or putting lots of time and energy into something that we may not even like.
Fear. Fear. Fear. It freakin’ sucks. I hate it and I can probably guess that you do too.
So what if there was no such thing as failure? Would you be more courageous? Would you try using a new ingredient or test out an unfamiliar recipe? Would you host that dinner party or finally take that cooking class?
If we never even try that thing we are most afraid of then we can never grow, or experience the joy of accomplishment and our creatively will certainly dry up.
That is not an option for me and I hope it’s not for you. I need failure’s feedback. I need it so I can experience the joy of nailing that new recipe and I need it so I can grow and be creative and have fun in the kitchen even if I burn the heck out of something.
So, how can you be more courageous in the kitchen?
Maybe it’s trying this great recipe for gluten-free, refined sugar free Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Balls?
Or maybe it’s finally signing up for a cooking class. Hint, hint – I have a really fun one coming up on March 12. It’s even FREE!
Or maybe it’s finally saying you’ve had enough of feeling tired and run down and you are ready to work with someone {me!} who can stretch you and hold you accountable in a loving and gentle way.
Whatever it is you CAN do it, but remember, you are already amazing.
And thank you. Thank you for encouraging me, for stretching me and helping me be more courageous.
As a thank you I’m giving away a copy of Daring Greatly to one lucky reader. Just comment below to be entered to win. Winner will be chosen March 19th.
I listened to her Ted talk and loved it! She is awesome, I definitely want to check out her latest book.:)
Her Ted Talk is what sold me! It’s SO good!
This book is on my to read list. Would LOVE to have my own personal copy! ❤️❤️
Hi Chassie! Great post on fear. It is time for entrepreneurs especially women to deal with the fear and move powerfully forward in our businesses. I was just looking at this book online last night.
Looking forward to being in SD soon so I can attend a cooking class. Cheers! Nicole
You are SO right Nicole and I love that you are helping women do that! I am very much looking forward to having you back too!
Wasting food is my biggest challenge cooking for myself. With it just being me, I always seem to never finish food before it goes bad.
This can definitely be a challenge. I am a big fan of freezing half of what I make to have another time because realistically I only want to eat something twice in one week!
Thanks for the blog–
I enjoy your enthusiasm and great ideas!
I love to be courageous in the kitchen, but am also so aware of the immediate response/reaction of others. It is not so much a fear of public humiliation, but also knowing/feeling that I am being judged . . . by others and by myself.
I have ventured out with several of your recipes . . . dare I invent my own?
This is great Gail – sometimes just voicing our fears is helpful and I say YES – dare to invent your own!
I am afraid of “health food stores” I’m overwhelmed by all the different terms and what they mean. Vegan, vegetarian, cage free vs. range, gluten free, dairy free…I didnt know that there were soooooo many options and quite frankly they scare me! That’s not even in the kitchen yet…when I get home I have to now taste everything…what does unsweetened coconut milk taste like? Do I like soy milk? And then how do I incorporate all of these new things into my daily life? How do I meal prep for 1 person? How do I know what is better for me, meat or vegan? Soy or nonfat? Gluten or no gluten? The list of fears can go on and on! :O(
Jennifer – thank you for being so open and sharing with me what your fears are and I agree that navigating all of that can be very overwhelming which is why I’m here to help 🙂
Great post and so true! The book sounds amazing and so inspiring! It’s often difficult when navigating the grocery store trying to make the best choices for yourself and others, try to inspire others with those choices and follow a consistent healthy plan. Time to conquer some fears in the kitchen and in life – failure and lack of will power be damned!
